Jeff Cairnes at work in the Legacy Woodcraft shop

OUR STORY

A Father, A Son,
and 40 Years of Craft

"I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship."

EXODUS 31:3

THE MEANING OF LEGACY

Two Meanings. One Name.

The Father and Son Legacy

Jeff and Jonathan Cairnes, building together. A master craftsman and his son, carrying the craft forward the way it was always meant to be — hand to hand, generation to generation.

Building for Generations

We build things so well they can be passed down. Not furniture that wears out in a decade. Heirloom pieces built to outlast the house they live in.

JEFF CAIRNES — FOUNDER & MASTER CRAFTSMAN

Nearly 40 Years at the Bench

Jeff Cairnes picked up his first hand tool in a high school woodworking class in 1987. He never put them down. Over the next four decades, he built furniture, built a career, and built the family's log home by hand in the mountains of Western North Carolina — every timber, every joint, every wall.

In 2020, Jeff made the decision that had been building for years: he turned his workshop into a full-time business. Legacy Woodcraft & Design was born.

Jeff is particularly passionate about reclaimed wood — the history, the character, and the irreplaceable quality of old-growth timber. Every piece he builds is described by clients as a work of art.

JONATHAN CAIRNES — CO-OWNER & PROJECT MANAGER

Built His First Birdhouse
Inside Those Unfinished Walls

Jonathan grew up watching his father build the family log home by hand. At 8 or 9 years old, inside the unfinished walls of that house, he built his first birdhouse with his father. That memory is the origin of everything.

Before joining Legacy full-time, Jonathan spent five years as a commercial general contractor project manager — managing pharmacy upfits, IT department renovations, a 70,000 SF warehouse, a parking deck, and an industrial addition to a beverage bottling facility. That background gives Legacy clients something most custom cabinet shops cannot offer: a project manager who understands job site schedules, budget management, and professional communication from the inside.

Jonathan's faith is the foundation of how he approaches every project. He believes the skill to design and build is a gift from God — and that every piece Legacy builds is an opportunity to glorify that gift through excellent work.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

The Values Behind Every Piece

Faith

We believe the skill to build is a gift from God. Exodus 31:3 is not a marketing tagline — it is the genuine foundation of why we build.

Craftsmanship

We build things the right way, with the right materials, every time. 3/4" plywood when 1/2" would be cheaper. Solid wood when MDF would be easier.

Honesty

We tell you what your project will cost, how long it will take, and what to expect. No surprises. No hidden fees. No excuses.

Legacy

We build things so well they can be passed down. Heirloom-quality work that holds up for decades — and still looks perfect.
